As one of Beach Cities Health District’s (BCHD) Walking School Bus volunteer coordinators, Ken ensures that 12-16 kindergarten to 5th grade children from Birney Elementary School realize the benefits of walking to school.
It’s no easy task and as Ken’s supervisor Timilie Losq explains, “Ken has always been such a positive and enthusiastic volunteer. He participates where he can, when he can, is reliable and always goes above and beyond the call of duty, helping us whenever we need it.”
Ken started as a Walking School Bus volunteer in 2006 and walked his three sons, now aged 10, 13 and 15, to elementary school every week. Not only does Ken walk the 15-minute route every Wednesday, he is also a volunteer for BCHD’s LiveWell Kids Nutrition program.
Ken enjoys the chit chat with the kids, getting to know them and taking an interest in their day. He fondly remembers a time a few years ago when a group of older kids played their musical instruments while walking to school.
He hopes others will support the program. “It is such a nice start to the day. You feel more energized and positive about the day whatever is happening in your life.”
