The Okinawans call it “Ikigai” and the Nicoyans call it “plan de vida;” for both it translates to “why I wake up in the morning.” Having purpose is linked with health and longevity, with studies showing that individuals who expressed a clear goal in life living longer than those who did not.
Are You Living Your Life with Purpose?
Renowned purpose expert Richard Leider asked retirees over age 65, “If given the opportunity to live life over, what would you do differently?” the majority of respondents said they would: 1) hit the “pause button” to reflect on their lives to make the most of the time they had; 2) taken more risks to pursue their dreams and life priorities; and 3) find their purpose earlier in life. Bottom-line: everyone wants their life, ultimately, to matter.
People with purpose live longer, have higher work performance and are happier. In the Beach Cities, we are connecting residents with opportunities to utilize their greatest gifts and talents and fulfill their purpose journey. Purpose Workshops can be helpful for all ages, including teens, college students and those going through work or life transitions.
Begin investigating your own purpose by creating an internal inventory of your life. Try to articulate your values, passions, gifts and talents. What are the things you like to do and the things you don't? Then incorporate ways to put your skills into action in ways that will add meaning to your life and the lives of others.
