Physical Activity & Active Transportation

Beach Cities Health District (BCHD), in partnership with Beach Cities school districts, created opportunities for additional physical activity minutes to be added into an average school day.

Physical Activity Recommendations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends children ages 6-17 participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. The average number of state-mandated physical education (P.E.) minutes for California elementary school students is a minimum of 200 minutes every ten school days.

Beach Cities Health District (BCHD), in partnership with Beach Cities school districts, created opportunities for additional physical activity minutes to be added into an average school day.

These opportunities include:

Walk & Roll to School Day is a annual celebration that brings neighborhoods together to experience the joy of an active commute. Organized nationally by the National Center for Safe Routes to School , the initiative has grown exponentially since launching in 1997. Today, thousands of classrooms across all 50 U.S. states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico lace up and roll out every October. What began as a one-day event has transformed into a sustained, year-round effort to make streets safer and keep kids healthy and active.

The National Center for Safe Routes to School offers a step-by-step guide to assist schools outside the Beach Cities plan a localized event of their own. Coordinators can also visit the official  Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day  website to find downloadable stickers, participation certificates, and other helpful promotional resources.

2026 Walk & Roll to School Day

Get ready to show your school pride for Walk & Roll to School Day on October 7, 2026! Elementary schools across Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach are joining forces for this annual international event.

Let’s Build on Last Year’s Success in the Beach Cities!

Last year, nearly 2,300 Beach Cities students, families, school administrators, local officials and BCHD staff laced up their sneakers or rolled on bikes and scooters together. This year, we want to break that record! By participating, our community is doing more than just enjoying a fun morning commute. We are working together to encourage daily physical activity, cut down on local traffic, and foster a close neighborhood spirit.

Let’s team up and make this year’s event the biggest one yet! Be sure to check directly with your child’s school for specific arrival times and meeting spots.  If you have any questions, please contact Tami Kachel at Tami.Kachel@bchd.org for additional assistance.

Creating Safe Streets for All

Active transportation networks (active transport), as defined by the U.S. Department of Transportation, help create vibrant communities by providing safe, comfortable, convenient, reliable, efficient and affordable ways for people to get around (US DOT). Examples of active transport include walking, biking, rolling or human-powered methods of travel.

We all share the responsibility of making Beach Cities streets safe for everyone, including pedestrians and cyclists. Safe places to walk and bike are important for supporting active, vibrant communities. Learn more about Streets for All here.
