A vision for health, livability and community.

Since 2017, Beach Cities Health District has been working with the community to reimagine our aging campus to better reflect our mission and meet the current and future health needs of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach residents. This is our community’s unique opportunity to chart the future of preventive health in the Beach Cities.

In pursuit of this vision, a campus master plan has emerged to purposefully build an intergenerational, vibrant and community-focused campus where residents, their families and neighbors can engage in healthy behaviors, form meaningful connections and be well… for many generations to come.

The Board voted to approve the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) process ⁠— originally started in June 2019 ⁠— with the Healthy Living Campus Master plan as the basis of the project description, informing the public and project decision-makers about significant environmental effects and identifying possible ways to mitigate or avoid those effects.

A robust public outreach process has been ongoing with neighbors, residents, and community leaders providing their perspectives about the proposed project. These valued insights, as well as information gathered from expert structural and financial consultants, formed the foundation of the refined Healthy Living Campus draft master plan presented to the BCHD Board in June 2020.

The BCHD Board of Directors certified the Final EIR in September 2021.

Healthy Living Campus planning has been a multi-year endeavor. The proposed project has undergone revisions based on community feedback and input from expert structural and financial consultants.

Community Working Group

During the planning phase, Beach Cities Health District (BCHD) staff formed a Community Working Group to help the board develop the project. This group of residents, leaders and stakeholders was selected to represent the various populations and organizations in the Beach Cities and served as a community sounding board and guidepost. The Community Working Group met 17 times from May 2017 to December 2020.

Measure BC

In July 2024, the BCHD Board of Directors voted 5-0 to put a $30 Million General Obligation Bond on the November 5, 2024 ballot. The measure did not pass. Measure BC, the Beach Cities Health District Community Health & Wellness bond measure, would have provided:

$9 million to complete construction of the allcove Beach Cities youth mental health center.
$8 million to remove the old South Bay Hospital building.
$7 million to replace the old South Bay Hospital building with two acres of open space and health & wellness amenities.
$6 million for other construction improvements (e.g., parking, grading, planning).

The measure would have generated $1.7 million per year for the project.

Board of Directors Meetings

BCHD holds public board meetings at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month (except Aug. and Dec.). Residents are encouraged to attend board meetings either via Zoom or at 514 N. Prospect Avenue. Details about the meeting and agenda can be found online.
