Although she was born and raised in Minnesota, Marcie Dean made Manhattan Beach her home in the early 1960s. Working as a stewardess for United Airlines at the time, she asked for a transfer to be close to her then boyfriend, Ed Dean, who later became her husband fifty-one years ago.
Though she doesn’t remember how she first heard of Beach Cities Health District (BCHD), she does remember giving birth to their daughter at South Bay Hospital before it became BCHD. Since 2002, Marcie has spent time volunteering at the Center for Health & Fitness (CHF), as did Ed until his passing last year. Marcie is a CHF Volunteer who helps the front desk and in the office of Julie Lumbao, CHF Programs Supervisor.
When speaking about Marcie’s contributions, Julie’s appreciation is apparent. “Marcie is such a pleasure to work with," she says. "She is so helpful to CHF and our members. She is friendly and engaging. She assists with various needs that we have, such as filing, entering data, welcoming our members and guests while at the front desk. She has an infectious smile that can brighten your day! And we laugh a lot when we're working - she makes it fun. It is a true pleasure to work alongside Marcie. I can always count on her for support.”
Marcie has found volunteering to be a great “opportunity to give but also to get, by meeting and making new friends,” encouraging others to give it a try. When she isn’t volunteering, Marcie can be found at CHF twice a week or out walking. She also enjoys reading and absolutely adores dark chocolate.
