Covered California is the health insurance market place where Californians can get brand-name health insurance under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. An individual may qualify for a discount on private insurance, or get health insurance through the state’s Medi-Cal program.

The Center for Health Care Rights (CHCR) is a California-based non-profit organization dedicated to assuring consumer access to quality health care through information, counseling, education, advocacy, and research programs. CHCR is supported by government and private foundation grants.

Schedule your in-person appointment with a state-registered Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) counselor. Appointments are currently available locally on most Thursdays at BCHD’s Center for Health and Fitness in Redondo Beach (note: you can schedule a session at any of their locations in LA County).

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD). Applying for Medicare is done through the Social Security Administration.
