Dear Beach Cities Resident,
We have a lot to report this month, with news about allcove Beach Cities, the Center for Health & Fitness, and more. But I’d like to begin with a core piece of the work we do at Beach Cities Health District: our volunteers.
April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month, and I salute our amazing volunteers for all the great things they do to help people in the Beach Cities and fulfill our mission of creating a healthy Beach Community. Whether you serve as a Campus Greeter, a Conversation Companion, a LiveWell Kids Docent or Garden Angel, an Errand Volunteer, Center for Health & Fitness support staff, a Care Management Intern or any other volunteer role with the District, we value you and the work you do to promote health here in the Beach Cities. We really appreciate everything our volunteers do!
Moving on to the Healthy Living Campus, work has begun on the new Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in the 510 Prospect Avenue building, with more work to start shortly on the new home of our Center for Health & Fitness one floor up from the PACE location.
In March, we executed a Letter of Intent with Sunrise Senior Living to negotiate a ground lease for the area now occupied by the old South Bay Hospital building and parking lots. The proposal from Sunrise includes Assisted Living, Memory Care, Independent Living, plus numerous community benefits. Members of the public can join BCHD Staff and stakeholders to review some of the proposed community benefits at our Strategic Development Half-day Meeting on Friday, May 8 at AdventurePlex.
On Saturday, May 16, we will hold a groundbreaking event for the permanent home of allcove Beach Cities at 1272 Beryl Street in Redondo Beach. This new space is dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of young people in our community. The 9,400-square-foot facility, opening in spring of 2027, will offer free, integrated services — including mental health, physical health, substance use support, peer and family support, and education and employment for young people ages 12-25. After the ceremony, stick around for covefest, a fun, youth-centered celebration with wellness activities, interactive art, food and music.
With all this work beginning, we have created a web page, www.bchd.org/construction , for residents to get news and sign up for updates about the various projects. I hope you will sign up and keep up with our progress!
In health,
Tom Bakaly, CEO
Beach Cities Health District
