Schools + Parents
Children + Schools

Healthy habits developed at a young age can last a lifetime, so Beach Cities Health District (BCHD) provides an array of programs and services in local schools to help grow a healthier generation of young people in the Beach Cities.

Using innovative, science-based programming, like LiveWell Kids and the Walking School Bus, BCHD and local school districts continue to achieve measurable results and nurture the development of the “whole child,” because research shows that healthier students perform better academically in the classroom and are more likely to grow up to be healthy adults.

Key Outcomes:

64% Drop in Childhood Obesity

Since implementing the LiveWell Kids obesity prevention program in every elementary school in Redondo Beach, the rate of childhood obesity plummeted from 20 percent in 2007 to 7.2 percent today

25% of Students Walking

Thanks to the efforts of the Walking School Bus program, a quarter of elementary school students in the Beach Cities currently walk to class – compared with just 11 percent of students nationally
